Is Ann Coulter Ignorant or Willfully Blind?
I tend to shy away from pure politics here because honestly, politics is generally a suckers game with few winners and a whole lot of hurt feelings. However, the recent government shut down in Washington and the bizarro world reasons that it happens have pretty much brought out all the wingnuts at both ends of the scale, so I figure this must be a pretty safe thing to talk about.
Rather than take a side however, I went looking to see what the sides are saying. There is a lot of truly ignorant stuff out there, a lot of material that is either misleading, taken out of context, or seemingly a full on fabrication. The one that really caught my eye is a post that was reposted and repeated in just about every conservative wing nut site I could see, it was from the well known and often laughed at Ann Coulter, called “DEMOCRATS TO AMERICA: WE OWN THE GOVERNMENT!”. It’s particularly good because the message is wrong from the word go.
The very first words of the story are “In the current fight over the government shutdown, Republicans are simply representing the views of the American people. “. This is why I think Coulter is either ignorant or willfully blind, because clearly the Republicans don’t represent the views of all of the American people, they don’t even seem to represent the views of HALF of the American people, because the president is a Democrat, and the Senate is majority Democrat. So right away, Ann Coulter pretty much blows it. The line should be:
“Republicans are simply representing the views of a small minority of rich, out of touch, ultra conservative American people.” Now it makes sense.
See, the problem here is that the Republicans lost when the Health Care legislation was passed. They lost again in the Presidential election where this was a center piece of discussion with the voters, but like a drunken frat boy who won’t take “no” from his unwilling date, they are trying to “defund” the problem, basically to try to get around the basic fact that it’s law by removing the money to make it work. Sore losers?
Example parts are “Responding to the people’s will, House Republicans first voted to fund all of government — except Obamacare. Obama refused to negotiate and Senate Democrats refused to pass it. “. I can’t imagine that she doesn’t understand that what the Republicans were trying to do was use the current budget crisis as leverage to disable and cripple legislation that has already passed house and senate and been signed into law. It’s incredible to think that the ultra conservatives think that they represent all of the people (they don’t, we have already shown that), or that it’s a proper way to go about dealing with a law they don’t agree with. It’s a hostage taking, plain and simple, and Obama is right not to negotiate with hostage takers. Give in today, and they will pull the same stupid stuff every time they don’t like – even if they have been clearly out voted.
The summary is classic as well “If you are in the minority of Americans not already unalterably opposed to Obamacare, keep in mind that the only reason the government is shut down right now is that Democrats refuse to fund the government if they are required to live under Obamacare. “. Ann, a piece of advice, when you write something like this, think about it the other way for a second: The real conclusion is:
“If you are in the majority of Americans vwith a brain, keep in mind that the only reason the government is shut down right now is that Republicans refuse to fund the government programs that have been passed into law by the house, Senate and sign into law by the President. “. When you look at it that way, the Republicans do look like someone who can’t take “no” for an answer.
